The Sandwich Ship
The disovery of a late medieval merchantman
a talk by
GUSTAV MILNE

In 1973 the remains of a large medieval ship were discovered near the Bulwark in Sandwich.
The timbers were recorded and the fragments were housed in Deal Maritime Museum. Not until the 1990s were funds available for full-time research by a team from University College, London, directed by Gustav Milne, when it was dated the the late 14th century. In light of modern research in maritime archaeology, this talk will set the Sandwich Ship in context. In particular, it will be compared with a similarly sized 15th century ship recently discovered during a high-profile excavation project in Newport, Gwent.
