Sandwich buildings in the time of Elizabeth 1 (1558-1603)

The first half of the sixteenth century was a disastrous period for Sandwich: the haven was silting up, trade fell away, the population declined, and few new buildings were erected. But from 1561 a stream of religious refugees from the Low Countries brought new skills, doubled the population, and led to renewed prosperity and a revival of civic pride. In the later sixteenth century the town built a new court hall (the present Guildhall) and an up-to-date, purpose-built grammar school. Meanwhile many new houses were erected by members of the town’s ruling class – smart ones for themselves, and smaller ones for the immigrants, who were also crammed into every available old property. This talk will discuss what happened and illustrate the surviving buildings.
